Daily Devotion

“Lord, the sun is setting, and the shadow of my life lengthens behind me, fading into the dimness of those long years. Lord, let me come home before dark.”

Robertson McQuilkin · A Promise Kept

Scripture

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Reflection

True to his wedding vow 'in sickness and in health, till death do us part,' Robertson McQuilkin resigned as university president to care for his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. During the twelve years of caring for her, he wrote this prayer: 'Lord, the sun is setting, and the shadow of my life lengthens behind me, fading into the dimness of those long years.' He was not afraid of death; rather, he feared failing to finish well, bringing shame to the Lord's name and grief to His heart. He once remarked that few people are said to finish well. Today, if I only care about starting fast and not finishing steadily, I might first ask myself: Have I ever prayed to 'finish well'?
