“What a privilege it is to be engaged in such a work; we truly have every reason to offer our thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father!”
William Campbell · Sketches from Formosa
Scripture
1 Corinthians 1:27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.
Reflection
Though nearly blind in one eye, William Campbell established Taiwan’s first school for the blind, teaching sightless children how to read and write. He considered it a profound privilege to take part in such a work—not because of his own strength, but because God delights in using the weak things of this world. Paul reminds us that God chooses the weak to shame the strong. We do not need to wait until we are fully 'ready' before we set out. If I tend to use my inadequacies as an excuse today, perhaps I should ask instead: Can God use this small measure of weakness in my hands to help someone?
