Daily Devotion
“The danger for missionaries lies not in the weight of their work, but in the thirst of their souls. If we are preoccupied with parish affairs and neglect our morning solitary moments with the Lord, our ministry will become a mere mechanical exercise. What we need is to draw strength from that 'secret place' so that we can stand firm in the public eye.”
William Wharton Cassels · Castles in Western China
Scripture
Mark 1:35 The next morning, before dawn, Jesus got up and went to a secluded place where he prayed.
Reflection
Gesley's warning serves as a mirror, reflecting the truth we often lose sight of in our busyness: the most weary are not the body, but the soul, parched from thirst. Jesus' choice to retreat to the wilderness before dawn at the height of his ministry demonstrates that true spiritual authority does not stem from public busyness, but from solitude in seclusion. Without the inner life's "investigation and deep foundation," outward ministry degenerates into a soulless mechanical movement. We need to recalibrate our life's priorities, finding strength to stand firm in the Lord's embrace before the world's clamor steals our attention.
