Daily Devotion
“True co-workers are not two people with equal talent standing side by side, but two people willing to smooth out half of their rough edges for the same goal. We are here not to prove who is more capable, but to prove the power of Christ. If my concession can open the door to the gospel wider, then this 'stepping back' is the greatest 'advance'.”
William Milne · Milne's private letter to Morrison
Scripture
2 Corinthians 12:9 He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Reflection
Milne's view of teamwork overturns the secular "logic of the strong": true unity is not the accumulation of talent, but the reduction of ego. When we feel the pain of clashing edges in ministry integration, it is God pruning our pride. Paul reminds us that God's power is made perfect in human weakness. This weakness is not incompetence, but a spiritual stance of willingly "stepping back" for the opening of the door to the gospel. When we stop rushing to prove our superiority and instead acknowledge our limitations and our need for others, Christ's power will shelter us like a tabernacle. Every time we choose to "shave our edges" for the greater good, it may seem like a loss of self, but in reality, it makes room for God's infinite power to roar forth within the team.
