Daily Devotion
“In what is necessary there must be unity, in what is free there must be tolerance, and in all things there must be love.”
Rupertus Meldenius · To the Theologians of the Augustusburg Confession: An Exhortation for Peace in the Church
Scripture
Ephesians 4:2-3 Be humble and gentle, with patience, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Reflection
Today is Mid-Autumn Festival, and we think of reunion and unity. In an age of division, Meldenius called for unity in necessary matters, freedom in unnecessary matters, and love in all things. This statement reminds me that true unity in the church lies not in our identical opinions but in our belonging to one body, one Lord, and one faith. If we hold fast to core truths, tolerate one another in lesser matters, and ground all things in love, we can live out the unity bestowed by the Holy Spirit. The fullness of the Mid-Autumn moon reminds us that unity in Christ is our true fullness.
