Daily Devotion
“Without prayer, we can do nothing. All our plans, our built schoolhouses, and the lessons we teach are but dust, unless the Holy Spirit breathes the breath of life into them. Pray for us, not that our work may be made easy, but that our faith may not fail.”
Ruth Haviland · The Life and Letters of Ruth Haviland
Scripture
Zechariah 4:6 He said to me, "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty."
Reflection
Ruth Haviland's insight beautifully echoes Zechariah 4:6, striking at the very heart of ministry and life. In building our lives, it is all too easy to fall into relying on external resources, personal talents, and planning abilities, mistakenly believing that our sweat and achievements determine the outcome. Yet, without the Holy Spirit breathing the breath of life, all outward busyness and accomplishments are ultimately but fleeting dust. True fruitfulness lies not in a comfortable environment, but in a life constantly connected to the truth of the Lord. Facing the challenges and unknown trials ahead, we should not pray for the removal of hardships, but rather that we may stand firm in the truth, let go of self-will, and yield completely to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
