Daily Devotion

“Argument may leave an opponent speechless, often humiliate him, and sometimes provoke him, but it can never persuade him. When Jesus Christ sent His disciples forth, He told them, 'Go and teach all nations.' He did not say, 'Go and debate with all nations.'”

Évariste Huc · Travels in Tartary, Tibet and China

Scripture

2 Timothy 2:23-25 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth

Reflection

Through the teaching of Jesus, Évariste Huc reminds us that the transmission of faith relies on instruction and life transformation, not on winning debates. Verbal refutation may silence a person, but it cannot produce heartfelt confession; instead, it easily stirs up pride and hostility. Truth does not need to be defended by human striving or victories; true persuasion stems from love, humility, and gentle teaching. Today, let us reflect: Are we trying to win an argument, or are we expressing truth and love?
