Daily Devotion

“In consequence of my unusual exertions of mind and body during the three months that I was detained in Rome, my health had suffered so much that, on my return to Naples, I was in a constant state of uneasiness and dejection. I now despaired of being able to find the assistance I wanted for the execution of my project, and began to regret that I had not accepted the accommodation that had been offered me by the Propaganda for my pupils and myself. … The three powers at length came to an understanding, and in April, 1732, after seven long years of anxiety and vexation, my efforts were crowned with the happiest success.”

Matteo Ripa · Memoirs of Father Ripa, tr. Fortunato Prandi (1846), ch. XXVII

Scripture

1 Corinthians 9:16-17 For I have nothing to boast about in preaching the gospel, for I am compelled to do it. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I do it willingly, I have a reward; but if not willingly, I have been given a task.

Reflection

Paul viewed evangelism as a "commission that had to be fulfilled," while Matteo Ripa, amid despair and mounting resistance, held on to this commission for seven long years. Often, we are deterred by the scarcity of our circumstances and the skepticism of others because we treat ministry as "our own choice," rather than "God's commission." When the vision comes from God, difficulties are not the end, but a moment to demonstrate God's power. Today, am I also responding with a willing and joyful dedication to the mission already entrusted to me?
