Daily Devotion
“Dr. Trumbull learned that the flow of that life was dependent upon two simple conditions. After having received the Lord Jesus as personal Saviour there is first, surrender, an absolute and unconditional surrender to the Saviour as Lord and Master of one's life, irrespective of the cost; and second, the quiet act of faith, apart from any feeling or immediate evidence that God does set the trusting soul wholly free from the law of sin.”
V. Raymond Edman · They Found the Secret (1960), chapter on Charles G. Trumbull, p. 123
Scripture
Hebrews 10:35-36 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, for it will be greatly rewarded. Be patient, so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what has been promised.
Reflection
Even if obedience to the calling is arduous, it is better than experiencing spiritual desolation in comfort. The real crisis is not a lack of resources, but losing the glory of the Lord out of fear of the consequences. Hebrews reminds us to have a “courageous heart,” a courage not based on self-confidence, but on unwavering faith in God’s promises. We must patiently fulfill God’s will. Do not focus on the cost before us, but on the “great reward.” In obedience, we preserve the spirituality of our group from thirst; in perseverance, we receive the eternal promises.
